Cuban chess Grand Masters Yunieski Quesada (ELO 2565) and Lázaro Bruzón (2615) lead the first phase of the national chess championships with seven of a possible nine points each heading into the final round of the tournament that begins on Friday.
On Friday, Yunieski will take on veteran GM Jesús Nogueiras (2570) who is in fourth while Bruzón will meet GM Omar Almeida (2538).
Meanwhile overseas at the Coros super tournament Spanish GM español Alexei Shirov (2723) leads the international event with five straight victories.
Cuban GM Leinier Domínguez (2712) has five ties, the last one coming against Italian Fabiano Caruana (2675).
