The top Cuban athletes in 2009 were honoured at a special awards ceremony held in Havana on Thursday.

Cuban cyclist Yumari Gonzalez read the athletes oath and on behalf of the other outstanding athletes thanked the Revolution for its support. “In a world battered by the economic crisis, no Cuban sports teacher or coach has been laid off and this is another achievement of our national sports movement,” added Gonzalez.

The ceremony was presided by Cuban Vice President of the Council of Ministers and President of the Cuban Olympic Committee José Ramón Fernández.
