CARACAS.— Venezuelan Minister of Interior and Justice Tarek al Aisami revealed the links of Salvadorian terrorist Francisco Chávez Abarca to the Venezuelan counterrevolution in a press conference held on Saturday.
Tarek al Aisami said that Chávez Abarca was detained in Maiquetía, state of Vargas, with a false Guatemalan passport in the name of Carlos Adolfo González Ruíz. After his true identity was discovered, information was requested to the Interpol in Venezuela, bringing to light a long list of terrorist actions. Al Aisami also showed the picture of the false passport.
The Venezuelan Minister of Interior and Justice said that the detainee has confessed to planning to commit violence ahead of Venezuela's September legislative elections and contacting fascist groups of the counterrevolution that cooperated or were trying to cooperate with these dark purposes.
The investigation is ongoing, said the minister, and added that Chávez Abarca is giving valuable information that will allow Venezuelan authorities to find the answers to some questions.
“Who is financing terrorism in Venezuela?; Who is paying this terrorist?; What are the counterrevolutionary groups behind these crimes?; What were the other objectives of this terrorist?
“We know that there are sectors within the Venezuelan oligarchy, in our stateless bourgeoisie, that have intensified their plans to assassinate the president [Hugo Chávez],” al Aisami said.
The minister added, “It's important to point out that even though charges against this terrorist are irrefutable, this person is guaranteed his rights and due process as has always been case with the Bolivarian government.”
Francisco Chávez Abarca was detained at the Simón Bolívar International Airport while trying to enter Venezuela with a false passport. Chávez Abarca, with alleged links to former CIA operative Luis Posada Carriles, is wanted for his suspected connection to a string of bombings across Cuba in the late 1990s.
