The International Day Against Homophobia was celebrated on Saturday in Havana with a program of activities carried out at the Pabellón Cuba and the headquarters of the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC).
Mariela Castro, head of the National Center of Sexual Education (CENESEX), said “This celebration is part of a wider education strategy to raise awareness about respecting free and responsible sexual orientation and gender identity. Homosexuals are not a problem, homophobia is.”
Activities included book and magazine sales, panel discussions on sexual diversity in the Cuban family, information kiosks on responsible sexuality, and the presentation of informative campaigns on sexual orientation, homophobia and HIV/AIDS.
Attending the campaign’s presentation were Ricardo Alarcón, president of the National Assembly; Yolanda Ferrer, general secretary of the Cuban Women’s Federation (FMC); and Fernando Rojas, vice minister of Culture.
