Since 1959, a new word has been inserted in the vocabulary of the Cuban population: solidarity. Those hairy-bearded young men who revolutionized the country half a century ago, taught Cubans to share every achievement and help those most in need abroad.
The old capitalists, and the newest, think that the presence of Cubans in the jungles of Viet Nam, in the caves of Laos and Cambodia, in Africa or the presence of health professionals serving in many countries around the world was and is a bad influence on those beneficiaries. However, the fact of helping all those people is one of the main principles of the Cuban Revolution, which has come to be a paradigm of the Cuban identity.
Listening to the anecdotes of those Cuban collaborators made us more sure of everything we have heard so far. At the House of Friendship a few people gathered to share their experiences.
These people talked about their experiences and showed photos. They talked about the Cuban help to Viet Nam to fight against imperialism, about Cuban health professionals in the underground caves in Laos, and that woman to whom a Cuban doctor gave 10 liters of blood, about the poultry help to North Korea and the outcomes of this, about the Solidarity Committees with Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia.
Construction workers, naval officers, specialists in different fields, doctors who served in Asia three decades ago among others who served in Pakistan were taught the concept of solidarity by Fidel.
Throughout these five decades and even in the most difficult times, Cuba has always been supportive. Therefore, we have always had the unconditional help of those recognizing the value of the Cuban Revolution. Every year, a great number of countries express their rejection toward the US blockade in the United Nations.
The prized awarded to Fidel by Father Miguel D’Escoto, the UN Assembly president, glitters when hearing all those anecdotes. This award recognizes Fidel as World Solidarity Hero.
We haven´t changed. We continue being supportive with every country around the world. Those thousands of Cuban doctors and teachers serving in Venezuela, Bolivia are a clear evidence of this. Despite all the geographic limitations, there are Cuban doctors also serving in Timor Leste and China.
Fidel was and continues to be the great master. Cubans of all generations, exceptional students, continue showing the value of so-li-da-ri-ty
